Boris Johnson finally condemns racism against England football players

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson says, "I utterly condemn and abhor the racist outpourings" against England's football players following the side's Euro 2020 final defeat.

While speaking in the Houses of Parliament, Johnson adds that people "guilty of racist abuse online" will be banned from attending matches and that social media platforms "will face fines amounting to 10% of their global revenues" if they do not remove racist content from their platforms.

Johnson's intervention comes on the heels of growing public outcry against the government's perceived permissive attitude to racism in football and larger society.

On Tuesday (July 13), leading England footballer, Tyrone Mings, accused Home Secretary, Priti Patel, of stoking the "fire" of racism by attacking players who take the knee before football matches.

More broadly, a mural dedicated to the pioneering social activism of leading England striker, Marcus Rashford, was defaced by racist graffiti  in Withington, Manchester.

Prior to the attack on the mural, Rashford had been criticized by Tory MP Natalie Elphicke for "playing politics" as opposed to "perfecting his game".
