Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) forces have identified and dismantled three terrorist and counterrevolutionary teams in the country's northwestern provinces of West Azarbaijan and Kordestan 10 days before the Friday presidential election.
"During the election time, the enemy had been pursuing special plans and sought to carry out terrorist measures but it was faced with firm reaction from the IRGC’s Ground Force," Commander of IRGC’s Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said on Monday.
He added that two terrorist and counterrevolutionary teams were dismantled in the cities of Oshnaviyeh and Baneh in West Azarbaijan and Kordestan provinces respectively.
Another terrorist team that infiltrated into the country from the city of Sarvabad in Kordestan province was also destroyed, Pakpour said.
The IRGC commander, however, emphasized that all border areas across the country are fully secured.
On Friday, millions of Iranians went to the polls inside the country and abroad to elect a successor to President Hassan Rouhani, who has served two four-year terms.
Ebrahim Raeisi garnered almost 62 percent of the votes in the election with a turnout of 48.8 percent.
Back on May 30, IRGC forces identified and dismantled a terrorist and counterrevolutionary team in the province of West Azarbaijan, according to a statement by the IRGC Ground Force’s Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada Base.
It added that the IRGC forces engaged the terrorist elements who tried to infiltrate the country through a border point close to the city of Piranshahr the night before.
