Iran’s prominent Sunni Muslim cleric, Molavi Abdul Hamid, has thrown his weight behind presidential candidate Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi, a fellow Shia Muslim cleric, in his presidential bid.
Abdul Hamid’s office said several members of the deliberative council of Iran’s Sunni Muslims had held talks with a number of the presidential candidates, especially Raeisi, Tasnim reported on Monday.
Raesi, it added, had separately held talks with Abdul Hamid and briefed him on his plans for implementing justice, resolving problems, and getting rid of discrimination.
Following consultations at the deliberative council of Iran’s Sunni Muslims, a statement was overwhelmingly adopted, which was also backed and approved by Abdul Hamid himself, in support of Raeisi’s presidential bid.
Molavi Abdul Hamid enjoys huge support Iran’s southeastern Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province, home to many Sunni Muslims.
He is the imam of the Makki Mosque in the city of Zahedan and director of the Jamiah Darul Uloom Zahedan, the main seminary there.
