Bush family member seeks Trump’s support for top legal office in Texas

The race for the attorney general’s office in south-central US state of Texas has become politically fraught with rival candidates banking on the support of former US President Donald Trump.

One of them is George Prescott Bush, the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush and nephew of former US President George Bush – both of whom don’t share great relations with Trump.

However, unperturbed by the family antipathy to the former US president, the former US Navy officer who serves as the commissioner of the Texas general land office has made peace with Trump.

The campaign handouts of Prescott Bush, given to supporters this week, have featured a quote from Trump, who ruthlessly mocked his father Jeb Bush in 2015, describing him as a “crook”.

“This is the only Bush that likes me! This is the Bush that got it right. I like him,” reads the characteristic Trump quote.

What has made the battle interesting is the fact that Bush’s competitor, Ken Paxton, is an avowed Trump ally, who had filed an unsuccessful lawsuit contesting election results in four states that Trump lost to Joe Biden last November.

The primary takes place in March, followed by the general election in November. Two Democrats — Lee Merritt, a civil rights attorney from Dallas, and Joe Jaworski, the former mayor of Galveston — are also expected to run. In 2018, Paxton had defeated the Democrat Justin Nelson.

While both front runners bank on Trump support in a region considered a Republican stronghold, for the former US president, it has become a dilemma which of the two to support.

“I like them both very much,” he was quoted as saying by CNN earlier this week. “I’ll be making my endorsement and recommendation to the great people of Texas in the not-so-distant future.”

Meanwhile, mudslinging, accusations and counter-accusations between the rival candidates continue with Bush accusing Paxton of corruption while basking in the false glory of Trump support.

“Enough is enough, Ken,” Bush said during a campaign kickoff in Austin. “You’ve brought way too much scandal and too little integrity to this office. And as a career politician for 20 years, it’s time for you to go.”

In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, he praised “the Trump days,” and criticized President Biden for reversing many of the previous administration’s policies at the border, referring to relaxing Trump’s hard-nosed immigration policies.

He even described the details of a chat he had with Trump, seeking his support.

“We had a great conversation a few days ago, he sent me his best, he had great words of encouragement,” Bush said of the man who once taunted his father as “low energy.”

Bush was the only prominent member of his famous political family to support Trump in 2016, which has earned him praise from the former US president.

Paxton, on the other hand, has positioned himself as one of the most pro-Trump attorneys generals.
