US gun violence

Two people have been killed and more than 20 injured in yet another mass shooting in the US. The shooting took place outside a billiards club in the city of Miami early Sunday morning. Police say a gang of three shot indiscriminately into a crowd and fled the scene. No one has been arrested so far. The US has a long history of deadly gun violence, with schools, work places and shopping centers being frequently targeted. Last year, nearly 20,000 gun-related deaths were recorded there. That’s more than any other year in at least two decades. President Joe Biden has described the gun violence in his country as an epidemic and international embarrassment.

Afghanistan violence

A mortar shell has hit a house holding a wedding ceremony in Afghanistan’s north-eastern Kapisa province, killing at least 10 people and injuring 18 others. Security officials say women and children were among those killed in the attack in Tagab district. No group has yet claimed responsibility. But provincial police and Taliban militant group have blamed each other for the mortar fire. Violence has increased across Afghanistan since the United States announced plan to withdraw its remaining forces from the country. Nearly two decades of the US military presence under the pretext of fighting terrorism has failed to bring peace to Afghanistan.

New Zealand floods

New Zealand has declared a state of emergency in its Canterbury province as flooding threatens thousands of homes there. Authorities are preparing for a mass evacuation as continued heavy rain has raised water levels. They say 3,000 homes are at risk, and that, some evacuations have already got underway. New Zealand’s army has been mobilized to help, if needed. Heavy rain is expected to continue into Monday. New Zealand’s Met-Service has issued a red warning for heavy rain for Canterbury and multiple warnings elsewhere. Officials say they are watching river levels carefully
