Dem infighting over Israel aggression on Palestinians

Divide appears to be growing within the Democratic Party ranks as some more progressive lawmakers pressure the administration of US President Joe Biden to take action in the face of Israel aggression on Palestinians.

Since the latest escalation of Israeli aggression on Palestinians, lawmakers have been making different stances at times opposite one another.

"This is happening with the support of the United States," Representative  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Saturday in reference to an Israeli airstrike. "The US vetoed the UN call for ceasefire. If the Biden admin can’t stand up to an ally, who can it stand up to? How can they credibly claim to stand for human rights?"

Massachusetts representative Ayanna Pressley also echoed similar sentiment on the House floor last week.

"We cannot stand idly and complicitly by and allow the occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people to continue," Pressley said. "I am committed to ensuring that our government does not fund state violence in any form, anywhere… The question at hand is should our taxpayer dollars create conditions for justice, healing and repair, or should those dollars create conditions for oppression and apartheid?"

There are also those democratic lawmakers who are continuing on the path of the US military-industrial complex’s full support for Israel.

“Please don’t be fooled by false choices: Israel or Hamas,” Representative Ted Deutch, a Democrat from Florida, said in a floor speech. “If I am asked to choose between a terrorist organization and our democratic ally, I will stand with Israel.”

The Israeli military has been under fire globally over its crimes against Palestinians, especially those residing in Gaza, which has already been under a crippling Israeli siege.

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas is firing rockets at Israel in response to Tel Aviv’s expansive policies as well as the killing of a Palestinian families.
