CDC recommends Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents amid concerns by families

A federal advisory panel claimed that children between 12 to 15 years old can receive the COVID-19 vaccine made by the Pfizer and BioNTech.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted 14 to 0 on Wednesday in favor of the two-dose vaccine’s emergency authorization after it was endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration.

This comes as a new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows only a limited number of families are eager to get their children inoculated.

According the findings of the poll, only 30 percent of families with kids ages 12 to 15 are ready to vaccinate their own children 26 percent want to wait to see how it’s working, 18 percent said they will vaccinate only if their child’s school requires it and 23 percent said they will definitely not get their child vaccinated.

Despite widespread vaccination plan, the US is still experiencing a relatively high COVID-19 death toll.

As of Wednesday, more than 33,574,418 people in the United States were infected with the coronavirus, and 597,463 died of the virus.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluationa (IHME) announced that the number of the US citizens who have died of COVID-19 is more than 900,000, 57% higher than what the American officials have announced.

“As terrible as the COVID-19 pandemic appears, this analysis shows that the actual toll is significantly worse,” said Dr. Chris Murray, IHME’s director.

“Understanding the true number of COVID-19 deaths not only helps us appreciate the magnitude of this global crisis, but also provides valuable information to policymakers developing response and recovery plans,” he added.

The study also found that the largest number of unreported deaths occurred in countries that have had the largest epidemics to-date.

“We hope that today’s report will encourage governments to identify and address gaps in their COVID-19 mortality reporting, so that they can more accurately direct pandemic resources,” Murray noted.
