House Republicans remove Cheney from leadership position over criticizing Trump

GOP Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney

The House Republicans have ousted GOP Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney from her post over what has turned into an unpardonable sin in today’s Republican Party: criticizing former US President Donald Trump and his attacks on the 2020 election.

The decision was made during a session on Wednesday by voice vote to make history by dumping a congressional GOP leader in the middle of their term.

Although Trump himself was not present, his name cast a heavy shadow on the GOP gathering and his supporters lined up to slam Cheney, a conservative Wyoming Republican, over refuting Trump’s narrative of the 2020 election.

“The problem is you can't have a Republican conference chair who continually recites Democrat talking points,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), former head of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and a close Trump ally, said. “You can't have a Republican conference chair who takes positions that 90 percent of the party oppose."

This comes as prior to the session Liz Cheney had reiterated in a fiery floor speech on Tuesday that she won’t backed down from her position about the legitimately of the US President Joe Biden’s victory.

"Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar," Cheney noted. "I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law, and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy."

Cheney, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney (2001-2009), was among ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, when the supporters of the former president broke into the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Biden's victory.

Much to the chagrin of her fellow Republicans, she has continued to criticize Trump for repeating claims of his election loss to Biden due to fraud, while calling on party members to reject his claims.
