Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in Kuwait on the fourth leg of a regional tour, has held talks with the Arab country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid Al Sabah on issues of mutual interest and leading developments in the region.

In a meeting in Kuwait City on Thursday, Zarif briefed the premier on the latest developments surrounding the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the P4+1 and said his trip to regional states concurrent with the Vienna talks indicates that the Islamic Republic attaches special significance to its ties with regional and neighboring countries.

Pointing to growing mutual relations in different fields, he stressed the need to further expand ties and make use of the existing capacities, particularly in trade and economic sectors.

The top Iranian diplomat said Tehran and Kuwait City should make efforts to promote dialogue as a means to solve the existing problems and bolster multilateral cooperation among regional countries.

The Kuwaiti PM, for his part, said the two countries should expand cordial relations in light of bilateral capacities.

Outlining his country’s stance on regional issues, the premier said Kuwait has played a leading role in promoting dialogue among regional states.

Sabah hailed the continuation of the Vienna talks aimed at reviving the 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and expressed hope the negotiations would yield positive outcomes.

Zarif and Sabah also exchanged views about the battle against COVID-19 and the environmental, consular and visa issues as well as the problems facing Iranian ships in Kuwait’s ports.

According to Kuwaiti Al Rai newspaper, the Iranian foreign minister and Kuwaiti prime minister discussed regional and international developments and mutual relations.

It added that they exchanged views about the two countries’ stance on ways to boost mutual ties.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Kuwait City on Thursday after wrapping his trip to Oman. He has previously traveled to Qatar and Iraq.
