Withdrawal of US troops

An Iraqi lawmaker says parliament will take a new position if upcoming talks with the US do not lead to the withdrawal of American forces from the country. Kati al-Rikabi is a member of the Iraqi parliament’s security and defense committee. He said there has been no firm statement from US officials on the withdrawal of American forces, since the Iraqi parliament called for the pullout. He said, that is concerning. Iraqi lawmakers voted for the pullout of American forces in January 2020. That came after a US drone strike near Baghdad killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and senior Iraqi commander Abu Mehdi al-Muhandis. Iraqis have held protests on various occasions against the presence of US forces in their country.
