Biden: Putin will 'pay a price' for 2020 election meddling
US President Joe Biden says Russian President Vladimir Putin will “pay a price” for his interference in the US 2020 presidential election with the aim of undermining Biden’s candidacy.
Moscow has repeatedly dismissed allegations of election meddling, also put forth in the wake of the 2016 presidential election.
In an interview with ABC News which was aired on Wednesday, the US president reiterated that he has cautioned Putin over his interference during a phone call the two presidents have had in late January.
“He will pay a price,” Biden noted. “We had a long talk, he and I. I know him relatively well. And the conversation started off and I said, I' know you and you know me. If I establish this occurred, then be prepared.'”
The remarks by Biden come a day after the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) blamed Moscow in its new report for influencing the presidential election.
“We assess that Russian President Putin authorized, and a range of Russian government organizations conducted, influence operations aimed at denigrating President Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party, supporting former President Trump, undermining public confidence in the electoral process, and exacerbating sociopolitical divisions in the US,” the report stated.
The report, however, failed to provide any evidence for the allegations.
US officials have repeatedly claimed that Russia and other countries would seek to interfere in the US presidential election race.
Russia has also been accused by US officials of meddling in the 2016 presidential election and colluding with Trump during his election campaign, a claim Moscow has repeatedly denied.
