Republican Senator Mitt Romney, who is one of the most prominent critics of Donald Trump, says the former president would easily win the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 if he seeks the White House again.
In an interview with New York Times on Tuesday, the Utah senator reiterated that, in his opinion, Trump has “the largest voice and a big impact in my party.”
“I expect he will continue playing a role. I don’t know if he’ll run in 2024 or not. But if he does, I’m pretty sure he will win the nomination,” Romney said.
Romney was among the few Republicans in the Senate who voted against Trump during his first impeachment trial last year. He also did the same at Trump’s second impeachment trial, along six other GOP senators, following the Jan. 6 protest at the Capitol.
But, Romeny was forced to soften his tone about Trump in the recent weeks after witnessing his persistent popularity among GOP voters.
Trump is planned to address the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Florida on Sunday, during which he will reportedly introduce himself as the Republicans’ “presumptive 2024 nominee” for president.
According to an unnamed longtime adviser to Trump, the former president’s speech will be a “show of force” with a message that “I may not have Twitter or the Oval Office, but I’m still in charge.”
