The Iranian interior minister and the Tajik president have discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation and ways to avert new threats to regional and international security.
Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, who arrived in Tajikistan’s capital of Dushanbe at the head of a delegation on Monday, met with President Emomali Rahmon on Tuesday.
They exchanged views on the intensification of geopolitical competitions and modern threats facing regional and global security.
The two sides also held talks about the coronavirus pandemic and the economic and financial crisis that is engulfing the world and posing a serious threat to the region at present and in the future.
The Iranian minister and the Tajik president discussed both countries’ practical measures to battle COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.
They also highlighted the more than 160 documents signed between the two countries to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including a memorandum of understanding on principles to expand security relations.
Rahmon stressed the importance of completely and actively implementing the document for the expansion of security cooperation.
Iran, Tajikistan emphasize fight against terrorism, organized crimes, smuggling of drugs
In another meeting on Tuesday, Tajikistan’s Minister of Internal Affairs Rakhimzoda Ramazon Hamro and Rahmani Fazli discussed ways to boost cooperation and exchange of information and experience in the fields of the fight against organized crimes, terrorism, extremism and smuggling if illicit drugs.
“In the Middle East region, extremism, terrorism, human trafficking, smuggling of drugs and insecurity are created mainly by countries from outside the region,” the Iranian interior minister said.
He added that the Islamic Republic has managed to resist against foreign pressures and aggression over the past 42 years, saying Iran’s resistance and independence to establish security and stability have irked outsiders.
Pointing to numerous political, social, cultural, historical and linguistic commonalities between Iran and Tajikistan, he said, “The two countries seek to promote peace, stability, justice and security in the region and among all countries…We are ready to expand relations between the two countries.”
The Tajik minister, for his part, pointed to the latest regional developments and the spread of terrorist groups among regional countries and called for collective cooperation in the battle against terrorism, organized crimes, smuggling of illicit drugs and cyber crimes.
He expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with Iran in such areas given the Islamic Republic’s experience.
Ramazon Hamro and Rahmani Fazli stressed the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation to adopt a common stance in regional and international organizations and pursuing good attitude to the two countries’ nationals.
