AS Roma have been eliminated from the Coppa Italia after going down to Spezia 4-2 at Stadio Olimpico.
Spezia, who entered the Italian Serie A this season got the upper hand after scoring two goals in the first 15 minutes.
But Roma kept their hopes alive, when Lorenzo Pellegrini converted from the spot in the 43rd minute.
Then, Henrikh Mkhitaryan got the equalizer for the hosts, after chipping the ball over the Spezia keeper in the 73rd minute, to send the match into extra time.
By then it was looking pretty bad for Roma as they went down to nine men. Spezia took advantage and scored the third when Daniele Verde headed the ball home in the 107th minute.
Finally, Roma’s misery was completed when Riccardo Saponara made it 4-2 with a delightful lob from outside the box in the final minute.
With the victory, Spezia set up a quarterfinal encounter against title holders Napoli on the 27th of January.
