US President Donald Trump is ending his term in the White House with the lowest approval rating of his presidency, according to a new opinion poll.
Only 34 percent of those surveyed in a CNN Poll said they approve of Trump’s performance as president, a record low. Before November’s election, Trump’s approval rating stood at 42 percent, the network added on Sunday.
Trump's job performance rating remains strong among Republicans at 80 percent but has dropped 14 points since October, according to the poll.
A majority of respondents, 54 percent, said they were now in support of Trump being removed from office before his term officially ends because of his role in the January 6 violent attack on the US Capitol.
That is larger than the share who backed impeaching and removing Trump from office at any point in 2019 or early 2020 in the run-up to his first impeachment in the Senate.
There is a sharp partisan divide on the issue, with nearly all Democrats – 93 percent—favoring removing the Republican president before January 20, while only 10 percent of Republicans feel the same.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for an unprecedented second time this week and charged with incitement of an insurrection.
The president, who has refused to concede defeat in the November election, had encouraged his supporters to march on Congress and disrupt the ceremonial counting of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral votes on January 6.
Five people, including a Capitol police officer, lost their lives as a result of the riot.
Over a third of Americans—36 percent—described the attack on the US Capitol as a crisis for American democracy, and another 39 percent said it was a major problem, the poll found.
Trump is unlikely to be removed from office as Vice President Mike Pence has ruled out invoking the 25th Amendment to expel him.
In addition, no Senate trial has been scheduled on the impeachment charge passed by the House before Biden is inaugurated.
