Stephane Peterhansel has secured a record-extending 14th Dakar Rally title after winning the 2021 edition of the event, beating Nasser Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz to the crown.
Starting the final day as race leader, Peterhansel finished 3rd behind stage-winner Sainz, and Al-Attiyah to add an 8th Cars Title to his list of achievements.
The triumph comes exactly 30 years after the Frenchman’s first success in Dakar, when he won for Yamaha in the motorbikes class. That was followed by 6 more titles on two wheels before switching to cars to reel off another 7 desert victories in Africa and South America.
This time around in Saudi Arabia, Peterhansel grabbed the lead after the 2nd stage and never looked back to eventually claim the victory from 3-time champion Al-Attiyah by almost 15 minutes, while last year’s winner Sainz rounded out a star-studded podium.
