The FSO Safer vessel moored off Yemen’s port of Hudaydah, laden with a significantly large number of crude-oil barrels, poses a major environmental threat since it has not been put under any maintenance since the beginning of the war on Yemen.

Recently, an agreement was reached between the government in Sana’a and the United Nations to maintain the reservoir. The UN has been stalling on the deal.

Yemen’s Supreme Economic Committee says the UN has surprised everyone by postponing the arrival of experts until February 15, which could cause a disaster due to the fact that water has already entered the engine of the tanker.

The delay of maintenance operation as well as the continued impounding of oil ships by the Saudi coalition have led to an oil derivative crisis from which Yemenis have been suffering for months. This has also affected the health sector.

Experts believe the sinking of the ‘floating bomb’ could cause an environmental catastrophe; a disaster Yemen will not recover from for the years to come. The crisis will also cause the extinction of millions of marine life from the Red Sea.
