The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights held a workshop marking Human Rights Day focusing on the state of the health sector in Gaza under the Israeli blockade.

Human Rights Day commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Currently the Gaza Strip suffers from a health crisis amid the Coronavirus pandemic. Israel's prolonged blockade and multiple wars have created serious obstacles for Gazans to have access to medical supplies.

Currently the number of Coronavirus infection in Gaza has jumped to over twenty six thousand cases. Despite the rapid increase of infections the Israeli regime continues to place tight restrictions on the entry of health supplies into the Gaza Strip.

The unsteady supply of medical equipment and testing kits for COVID-19 has compounded the struggle of medical teams in Gaza, undermining their efforts to contain and track the spread of the Coronavirus. During the workshop health officials warned that Gaza hospitals are running short on intensive care beds for Coronavirus patients.

Gaza has 180 ICU beds for a population of about two million. On Human Rights Day Israel continues to violate the rights of Palestinians. The extensive nature of the Israeli blockade has had a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of Palestinians in Gaza. Experts say that the dire situation of Palestinians in this tiny coastal territory reflects the scope of Israel’s human rights violations.
