Israeli military forces have shot and injured a Palestinian man in the southern part of West Bank over an alleged stabbing attempt against the regime's soldiers, amid heightening tensions in the occupied territories in recent weeks.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the attempted stabbing occurred outside the al-Fawwar refugee camp, which lies southwest of the city of al-Khalil, also known has Hebron, more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Jerusalem al-Quds, on Sunday morning.

The statement added that troops at the scene opened fire at the man and injuring him before taking him into custody. No Israeli soldiers were injured in the purported assault.

The suspect was taken to Beersheba’s Soroka Medical Center for treatment.

He was identified by Palestinian officials as a 41-year-old resident of the nearby town of Duma.

Last Wednesday, Israeli forces shot and killed a young Palestinian man, whom they alleged to have carried out a shooting attack in the northern sector of the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli military, in a statement released at the time, claimed that the Palestinian, who was armed with a pistol, arrived from the direction of Nablus and shot at soldiers manning a military post near the southern exit of the city.

Palestinian news outlets later identified the man as 29-year-old Bilal Adnan Rawajbeh.

They said the young Palestinian man was killed when Israeli forces fired shots at his white Hyundai vehicle near the Hawara checkpoint.

According to the official Palestinian WAFA news agency, Rawajbeh was a legal advisor with the rank of captain in the Palestinian Preventative Security Forces, one of the Palestinian Authority’s most powerful intelligence organizations.

WAFA accused the Israeli troops of firing at him “at point blank range… while he was passing through the checkpoint.” The news source called his death “an execution.”

Many Palestinians have sustained injuries or lost their lives in similar incidents under the pretext of alleged stabbing or car-ramming attacks.

The Israeli regime has been criticized for its extensive use of lethal force and extrajudicial killings against Palestinians when they do not pose an immediate threat.
