Czech rider Josef Cerny has won stage 19 of the Giro d’Italia, as Wilco Kelderman retained his lead in the general classification, while a protest from the peloton led to over 100 kilometres being slashed from the route.

Cerny launched his attack with 21 kilometres to go and held off a late-chase from Victor Campenaerts to win the stage 18 seconds clear of the Belgian, with home rider Jacopo Mosca finishing third.

That’s while in the race for the Pink Jersey, Kelderman maintained his slender 12 second lead over Jai Hindley.

But the day was overshadowed by a revolt from exhausted riders, who forced the organizers to cut the 251 kilometre route into half due to poor weather conditions, as the peloton rode the first 125 kilometres on a bus.

The race continues on Saturday, with a mountainous 198 kilometre penultimate stage, and hopefully it'll be a clearer day.
