Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has extended felicitations to Emomali Rahmon for his re-election as the president of Tajikistan.
In a congratulatory message on Monday, Rouhani said, “I sincerely congratulate His Excellency on his re-election as the president of Tajikistan.”
“I am confident that, in view of the cultural and historical commonalities between the two friendly and brother countries, the comprehensive relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Tajikistan will further expand in his new term to ensure common interests and bolster regional peace and stability.”
Rouhani wished health and success for the Tajik president as well as dignity and glory for the people of Tajikistan.
Tajikistan’s incumbent was reelected in a landslide victory on Monday, with the Central Electoral Commission saying that 90.9 percent of voters had cast their ballots for Rahmon.
He has been at the helm of the 9.5-million-strong country for nearly three decades. Rahmon is hailed as a figure that has brought peace and stability since he led his nation out of civil war in the 1990s.
Constitutional changes passed in 2016 allow the ‘Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation,’ as Rahmon is officially known, to run for office an unlimited number of times.
