US sanctions on Iranian banks

The United States has targeted Iran’s financial sector by imposing sanctions on 18 Iranian banks. The Treasury Department announced the measures Thursday, just weeks ahead of the American presidential elections, but it failed to come up with any specific accusations against most of the banks.

It was just declared that the Iranian financial sector may be used to support the government's nuclear program. Despite claims made by the US Treasury that the sanctions will not apply to humanitarian goods such as food, medicine or medical devices, European diplomats have asserted that the sanctions will have dire humanitarian consequences. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has called the new sanctions a terrorist effort.

The new sanctions come in blatant defiance of growing international calls for Washington to ease its sanctions amid a deadly Coronavirus. 1- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says new U-S sanctions against his country are a terrorist effort to prevent Iran from purchasing food and medicine.
