South Korea prepares to repatriate remains of Chinese soldiers

The remains of 117 Chinese soldiers from the Korean War that were unearthed by South Korean military personnel in 2019 are ready for being sent to China in coffins at the 17th Infantry Division in Incheon.

South Korean Defense Ministry on Saturday (September 26) prepared to return the remains of Chinese soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.

A total 117 remains and 1,368 items which were found with the bodies and believed to be their belongings will be repatriated on Sunday (September 27), according to the defense ministry.

The Korean War started June 25, 1950, when Communist North Korean troops launched a surprise attack across the 38th parallel into South Korea. US-led United Nations forces battled Chinese and Soviet-backed North Korea, in which three million soldiers and civilians were killed and five million became refugees.

North and South Korea are technically still at war since the conflict ended in a truce without a peace treaty.
