At least 2 Pakistani soldiers have been killed in a latest exchange of fire between the Pakistani and Indian troops in the disputed Kashmir region.

The incident highlights the continued tensions between the two nuclear armed neighbors. Tensions continue to deepen between India and Pakistan over the longstanding Kashmir dispute.

In a latest sign of escalating tensions, the two countries exchanged fire along the Line of Control, a de facto border that divides Kashmir India between Pakistan.

Pakistan army said in a statement two of its soldiers killed in the firing as it responded to the Indian action inflicting damage across the border.

Islamabad blamed New Delhi for the escalation. Both sides often accuse the other for initiating the fire. Since independent media has no access to the region, it is difficult to verify the claims from both sides.

Pakistan and India had agreed on a ceasefire in 2003. The truce lasted well over a decade with a fewer incidents of clashes. But in recent years there have been unprecedented increase in border clashes, causing causalities on both sides. The root cause of their tension is linked with the Kashmir dispute.

India in August last year unilaterally changed the special status of the disputed territory, dealing a serious blow to any prospects of peaceful solution to the problem.

Pakistan contested India’s unilateral changes and since then has been raising the issue at all forums including at the UN Security Council.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is set to address the UN General Assembly session in couple of day times. The official word here is that his speech will dominate the unresolved Kashmir dispute as he will seek the world body’s help to give Kashmiris their right to self determination.
