US special envoy for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad has arrived in Islamabad to hold talks with Pakistani officials regarding the Afghan peace process.
The US envoy sat for talks with top Pakistani military generals on the intra-Afghan talks underway in Doha between the Afghan government and Taliban militants.
Many believe the top US envoy wants Pakistan to use its influence on the Taliban to soften their stance during the talks.
Both sides have different views of the future system of governance of the country after nearly 5,000 American troops leave Afghanistan next year under a peace deal signed between the Taliban and the US in February.
Pakistan has sounded optimistic about the intra-Afghan talks, but not without measured words of caution.
The Taliban now control large swaths of Afghanistan. Reports say the militants have stepped up their attacks on Afghan security forces over the past couple of days to build up pressure on the Afghan government to concede to their demands in the intra-Afghan talks.
Apart from optimism about the ongoing talks, some believe that the establishment of peace will be contingent upon the meeting of Afghans’ demands; issues such as the government's achievements over the past two decades that are considered as a red line for Afghans.
