Serbia embassy move makes Palestine victim of Trump's electoral ambitions: PLO

The secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) says US President Donald Trump has made Palestine a “victim” of his electoral ambitions as Serbia moves its embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds following a Washington-brokered deal.

On Friday, the American president announced that the US had brokered an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, two Balkan archrivals, two decades after they went through a bloody war.

From the deal, however, came out two unexpected decisions too. Serbia said that it would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied Jerusalem al-Quds, some three years after Washington, in a highly provocative move, recognized the city as Israel’s “capital.”

Majority-Muslim Kosovo, for its part, vowed that it would recognize the occupying regime, adding that it would also set up its diplomatic mission in Jerusalem al-Quds after earning Israel’s recognition.

The move comes as Kosovo desperately seeks to further legitimize its 2008 declaration of independence and statehood.

“Palestine has become a victim of the electoral ambitions of President Trump, whose team would take any action, no matter how destructive for peace... to achieve his re-election" in November, Saeb Erekat tweeted on Friday.

His comments were made hours after Kosovo and Serbia announcements, suggesting that they were more to bolster Trump's re-election prospects in two months while victimizing Palestine and its cause.

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas’ political bureau, says the Israeli regime has no future in Palestinian territories.

Last month, Trump also brokered an agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that would lead to a full normalization of diplomatic relations between the two sides.

“This, just like the UAE-Israel agreement, isn't about Middle East peace,” Erekat added.

Separately, senior Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi also asked, “What else will Trump procure for Israel before November?”

The highly controversial deal between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv has been widely condemned across the occupied Palestinian territories and the Muslim world.

The UAE-Israel deal marks the third such normalization agreement the occupying regime has struck with an Arab country after Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994).

The Palestinian premier says landing of the first Israeli plane in the UAE is a clear violation of the Arab consensus against normalization with the regime.

The UAE, which scrapped its economic boycott against Israel last month, is the first country in the Persian Gulf region to reach such a deal with Tel Aviv. Abu Dhabi was already believed to have clandestine relations with Tel Aviv.

The UAE-Israel agreement is expected to be signed at a White House ceremony in coming weeks.

Late last month, a US delegation, along with a high-ranking Israeli delegation, traveled to the UAE and met with Emirati officials to hammer out the details of the arrangement.
