Nicola Sturgeon outlines post-Covid future

Nicola Sturgeon has significantly enhanced her political standing during the pandemic on account of her effective leadership of the crisis

Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has set out a vision for a coronavirus-free Scotland as her government prepares to unveil its latest policy and legislative agenda.

Sturgeon, who is also the leader of the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP), has confidently proclaimed that Scotland “cannot let coronavirus define its future”.

Sturgeon’s confident stance comes ahead of an expected imminent announcement of her program for government for the coming parliamentary year.

The First Minister warned that it will not be a “normal” program in so far as health and the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic will form its cornerstones.

Meanwhile, the Scottish government is expected to announce its legislative agenda for the rest of the parliamentary session as early as Tuesday (September 01).

Addressing the nation, Sturgeon said: "Next week, I will set out radical and wide-ranging policies not only to help Scotland through this crisis but to drive a strong recovery with a renewed focus on what matters to people across the country”.

"We have an opportunity, not simply to go back to how things were, but to address many of the deep seated challenges our country faces”, Sturgeon claimed.

The First Minister proceeded to say that the program for government 2020-21 will be based on “our [Scottish government’s] determination to recover from this virus and deliver a fairer, greener and more prosperous Scotland for everyone".

Demonstrating her far-sighted leadership style, the SNP leader said: “We must also look to the future, to think about how we can help people, businesses and communities recover from this pandemic".

Sturgeon has won plaudits since the onset of the Pandemic for her consistently risk-averse leadership and careful day-to-day management of the crisis.

By contrast, her opponent in London, UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has been consistently scolded throughout the crisis for demonstrating poor and erratic leadership.
