The European Union should reassess its relations with Turkey in light of a series of recent events, Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said on Thursday, citing special concern about the situation in the eastern Mediterranean.
Speaking on his way to an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Berlin, Schallenberg said Europe needed a "reality check" about EU-Turkey relations.
Also on the agenda at the informal talks is a crackdown on protesters in Belarus and the suspected poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.
EU foreign ministers are seeking sanctions against Belarus to pressure President Alexander Lukashenko to hold new elections.
Eager to support mass protests against Lukashenko's 26-year iron rule, EU ministers are considering travel bans and asset freezes on up to 20 people responsible for a crackdown on demonstrators two weeks after an election they say was rigged.
