"Belarus is threatened and the very survival of the nation is at stake’’: the latest words from Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Two weeks after winning the presidential election by a landslide, the president appeared in military fatigues over the weekend and ordered troops to the country’s western border.

In a statement, the western military alliance rejected that accusation but said it was keeping a close eye on events in the eastern European country. ‘’As we have already made clear- the organization said, NATO poses no threat to Belarus or any other country and has no military build-up in the region.

But long-time ally Russia begs to differ. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov described the opposition candidate’s political agenda as unconstructive and accused her of stirring-up anti-Russia sentiment in the former soviet republic and of plans to join NATO.

Supports of opposition candidate have continued their protests in defiance of a warning from the country’s military, chanting for Lukashenko to leave power, demanding new elections, and rejecting the idea that they are puppets of western powers as suggested by the president.

That at the same time as their leader Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya tries to build an international anti-Lukashenko coalition, and is due to meet a US envoy this week.
