Israeli forces shoot hearing-impaired elderly Palestinian in West Bank

A photo by Palestinian media shows Israeli troops confronting an elderly Palestinian in the occupied West Bank, August 17, 2020.

Israeli forces have shot and injured a mute and deaf Palestinian man on suspicion of carrying a knife in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian media reported that Israeli soldiers on Monday opened live fire on the 60-year-old at the Qalandiya checkpoint, located between Jerusalem al-Quds and Ramallah.

Israeli authorities said the elderly man approached the checkpoint on foot in a lane reserved for vehicles. The soldiers shot him in the lower limbs when he did not reply to calls to stop. It was not sooner than the shooting took place that the Israelis realized the man was disabled.

“It turned out that the man was deaf and mute and that he was not in possession of a knife,” Israeli police said.

Earlier, a Palestinian young man was shot near an Israeli military barrier in the city of Bethlehem.

The 18-year-old man was wounded in his right leg on Sunday night when an Israeli soldier shot him from a watchtower in the vicinity of Bilal bin-Rabah Mosque at the northern entrance to Bethlehem.

Opening fatal fire on Palestinians is not uncommon among Israeli forces. The shooting takes place on accusation that the targets attempt stabbing attacks.

Human rights groups have repeatedly criticized the Tel Aviv regime for its shoot-to-kill policy as a large number of the Palestinians killed at the scene of the alleged attacks did not pose serious threats to Israelis.

Israeli troops have on numerous occasions been caught on camera brutally killing Palestinians, with the videos going viral online and sparking international condemnation..

Separately, Israeli forces kidnapped several Palestinians in a series of raids across the West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds, the Palestinian Information Center reported

According to the report, Israeli forces abducted Palestinians early Monday after breaking into their homes.

Israel holds more than 7,000 Palestinians in its jails. Most of the prisoners are being held with no indictment or trial, under a controversial policy known as administrative detention.
