A group of Venezuelan political parties led by US-backed opposition figure Juan Guaido have announced they will boycott the parliamentary election scheduled for early December, raising doubts about transparency of the election process.
Leaders of these parties say they will continue to urge the United States to militarily intervene in Venezuela, describing it as the only way to restore democracy in the Latin American nation.
These opposition politicians claim to represent 27 organizations that oppose President Nicolás Maduro.
However, a different wing of the opposition says it will be running in the election.
While the opposition is divided, government officials unanimously defend the election as free and fair.
Venezuela's government says it will hold legislative elections this year despite decision by a number of US-backed opposition parties to boycott the elections. Officials say the vote will be totally legal as many other parties will be running.
