Boris Johnson looking for 'White House' style spokesperson

There is speculation that Boris Johnson's poor performance during the daily coronavirus briefings has led him to consider appointing an official spokesperson

Reeling from recent public relations disasters, the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has apparently decided to opt for a White House-style spokesperson.

The job vacancy has been advertised on the Conservative Party’s LinkedIn page with the description that it is an opportunity to “communicate with the nation on behalf of the prime minister”.

Besides the job description, the advertisement lists essential skills including “excellent risk management and crisis communication skills”.

The salary is listed as “based on experience” but according to the Daily Telegraph the figure is likely to be in excess of £100,000 per annum.

The successful applicant is expected to answer questions at regular press briefings and conferences beginning in October.

The BBC speculates that the successful applicant is likely to be an “experienced broadcaster” who will – once appointed – become the subject of “intense media scrutiny”.

According to the BBC, the new spokesperson will be employed as a “special adviser”, which is essentially a temporary class of civil servant.

Crucially, the spokesperson will be free to attack opposition parties, in addition to setting out the government’s policy positions.

Reacting to the job advertisement – and the media hype surrounding it – Labor leader, Keir Starmer, warned the new role risks “unbalancing the political discourse” as it is “obviously a political move”.

Starmer added that Labor was considering ways to “get a right of reply” at the briefings and conferences.
