The French port town of Le Pouliguen was one of a handful of French resorts to impose the wearing of masks in the open Friday in response to a surge in COVID-19 cases in the western part of the country.
Overnight, CRS riot police patrolled the popular quayside and promenade to warn holidaymakers that the wearing of masks was now mandatory, after the local town hall decided to tighten measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
The order, which was signed on Thursday implemented on Friday, could mean fines for anyone who fails to don a mask in the center of the town.
France Info radio reported that several resorts in Brittany and western France had stepped up precautions after a surge in COVID-19 cases, which saw a 26% increase nationally. Many of the clusters are in western France and Brittany.
France last Monday imposed the wearing of masks in enclosed spaces, but the local rulings take the restrictions one step further.
Total deaths in France from the novel coronavirus have reached 30,182 as of Thursday.
