China has advised Britain against treading the “wrong path” with regard to Hong Kong and bilateral ties, warning that Beijing will respond to actions that amount to interference in its internal affairs.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wang Wenbin urged London on Monday to avoid making further steps down the wrong path concerning its relations with Beijing.
He made the comments during a daily media briefing, adding that China would respond resolutely to actions that interfered with China's internal affairs in Hong Kong.
“These HK-related remarks turn a blind eye to the basic facts that the national security law is for the sustained success of One China, Two Systems,” Wang said, referring to the way Hong Kong has been governed since it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
“We strongly condemn these actions. We urge the UK to take no more steps down the wrong path, so as to avoid further damage to China-UK relations.”
His remarks came following multiple reports that London was poised to suspend an extradition treaty signed between Britain and Hong Kong after Beijing introduced a national security law in Hong Kong.
UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab Raab is slated to update the Commons on Monday afternoon about a Foreign Office review into the UK’s extradition treaty with Hong Kong, and is expected to follow the US, Canada and Australia in suspending it.
London and its allies claim the law would undermine the city’s autonomy and the “one country, two systems” principle. China has repeatedly slammed them for their “interference” in the domestic affairs of Hong Kong.
Beijing says it will resolutely push forward with its decision to implement the national security law over the territory.
