Just over two weeks after lockdown was effectively lifted in England and police forces across the country are struggling to contain a crime wave.
Nowhere is the situation more volatile than in London where two Metropolitan Police officers were injured last night whilst trying to disrupt an illegal street party.
According to the Met, riot police had tried to “shut down” an “unlicensed music event” at Woodberry Down Estate in Finsbury Park.
As riot police moved in, objects including canisters, bottles and a bicycle were thrown at police and two males, reportedly aged 18 and 19, were arrested.
Reacting to last night’s events, the Met’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner, Lucy D’Orsi, condemned the “irresponsible actions” of the “organizer” of the illegal event.
"Under no circumstance will policing accept this [violence] particularly after we had appealed for such events not to take place", D’Orsi added.
The Deputy Assistant Commissioner’s strong words come in the wake of repeated warnings by the Met and other police forces in England about the potential for disorder once pubs and bars reopen.
Since pubs were allowed to reopen on July 04 serious violence has broken out at several events across London with seven people (aged between 18 and 43) murdered in the past eight days alone.
