Six-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has put Mercedes on pole position for the first ever Styrian Grand Prix at Austria's Red Bull Ring.
In a wet and wild qualifying session, the Briton secured the record-extending 89th pole of his career with a final effort of one minute, 19.2 seconds.
That was a stunning 1.2 seconds faster than his nearest rival Max Verstappen of Red Bull. McLaren's Spaniard Carlos Sainz registered a career best after qualifying third with Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas finishing fourth.
On Sunday, defending champion Hamilton will be seeking his 85th grand prix triumph to edge closer to Michael Schumacher's all-time record of 91 wins.
The race will be the first time a track hosts two Grands Prix in the same season. Bottas was the winner of last Sunday's season-opening Austrian Grand Prix.
