Police deployed water cannon and arrested dozens of protesters at a demonstration against coronavirus restrictions in the Hague on Sunday.
The rally was banned as organizers expected a turnout of 10,000 people which exceeded the limit on social gatherings. "The Government tries to steal our freedom for a little bit and it's the beginning of something very big and most people don't realize what it means when a little bit of freedom is kept away," said Wim Lobker, a protester.
A separate, smaller demonstration was held in a park where activists were seen defying social distancing rules recommended by the government.
