Malians on streets in Bamako call for resignation of President Keita

Thousands of protesters led by opposition coalition leader and Imam Mahmoud Dicko gathered on Independence Square in Bamako for the second time in less than two weeks.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of current President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, citing dangers of the ongoing escalating militant attacks as well as excessive violence between local communities.

Massive crowds gathered as protesters were heard singing, chanting and blowing vuvuzelas together. "Our men are dead. Our children are dead. They have no work. Our men too. We barely even have enough to eat," deplored a protester.

Residing President Ibrahim Keita, better known as IBK, has been in power since 2013. He won a second election in 2018 and still has three more years of his presidency.

The president had previously pledged to form a new government in unison with opposition members but progress has not yet been made.

Mali has suffered massively from a range of problems in the last few years. The economy has been worsening constantly, coronavirus has been an issue and a recent teachers strike have all angered local citizens.
