F1 cancels Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan rounds

Azerbaijan, Singapore and Japan have joined the list of Formula One Grand Prix, cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but F1 is still planning for a 15 to 18 race season amid interest from new circuits.

The F1 issued a statement on Friday saying that the street-based circuits of Baku and Singapore made hosting the events impossible, while ongoing travel restrictions to Japan has also led to the cancellation of the Suzuka race.

That brings the number of cancelled races up to 7, which opens up a big gap in the schedule from September to October.

However F1 is still working to confirm other events for that period with China and Canada as the main fly-away options along with additional European venues.

An initial eight-race calendar in Europe has already been announced, with F1 expecting to publish a new full schedule before the season begins in Austria in the first week of July.
