The day millions of Britons had been waiting for is finally here, months after the British government announced a nationwide lockdown, bringing life in the country to a veritable standstill.

We took to the streets of London, the worst hit city in the UK, to ask people what they thought of the changes.

The UK Government says it’s “reasonably confident” the measures will be “manageable” and tightened again if conditions become “less favorable.” Confidence not shared by some of the top scientists advising it. They say the decision to ease the measures was political.

Meanwhile, the government says it has exceeded its target to increase coronavirus testing capacity to 200,000 a day by the end of May, yet by Sunday evening, a little more than 115,000 tests had been carried out, and for several days, the government has been unable to give figures on the exact number of the people tested.

The government says it will only go ahead with some of the plans to further ease the lockdown in a cautious and data-driven way, meaning how things will pan out in the coming days and weeks is critical.
