UK enters first phase of easing coronavirus lockdown

The back-to-school row is raging across the UK. Teaching unions backed by the British Medical Association have raised concerns about safety. Parents are demanding the right not to send their kids back.

Some local authorities say they will defy the government decree by refusing to reopen on June first. Westminster has indicated it might take action against them if they don’t. These are trying times but the government insists it is safe for schools to reopen.

An online poll shows 59 percent back the reopening of schools. Countries like Denmark carefully reopened last month. Split classes outdoor lessons and playing in little groups seems to be working. Copenhagen says schools have not become infection hotspots and its clear trust in the government is key to the transition.

When it comes to schools, the government has a myriad of variables to consider. From mental health, food security and domestic abuse to educational equalities. Some say England is just not ready but while acknowledging the public’s 'frustration' over the 'complex' lockdown plan the Prime Minister is refusing to give in to pressure, of which there is plenty.
