The world is in crisis mode as countries around the globe are one by one going into lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. But for some countries, this is an opportunity to come together and to support one and other. With countries like Cuba sending their doctors to vulnerable nations like Italy, which have more recorded deaths than anyone else.

On the other hand, the United States has taken the opportunity to impose more economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran under the guise of its so-called maximum pressure campaign.

The new measures taken by Washington caused outrage around the world, with many taking to social media to voice their disapproval, including the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan who tried to appeal to President Trump on humanitarian grounds to lift the sanctions against Iran.

The sanctions against Iran are cruel at the best of times but during the height of a global health pandemic, for many, they are simply criminal. Evidently, these sentiments were also felt by 12,000 British citizens, who signed a petition calling on the UK government to suspend the US imposed sanctions on Iran.

Covid-19 is certainly a momentous moment in history because of its far-reaching and global implications and when the history books are written many will struggle to comprehend how a small socialist Caribbean island- Cuba- was able and willing to send doctors to support virus stricken nations like Italy; while the United States, the greatest economic and military power in the world was imposing harsh economic sanctions against virus stricken nations like Iran.
