Nearly 9,000 evacuated in German city ahead of WWII bomb disposal

Nearly 9,000 residents had to be evacuated and the area around Messplatz had to be cordoned off in Darmstadt on Friday morning, as bomb disposal teams prepared to find and disarm a WWII-era bomb.

Police secured the area where the evacuation was due to take place, with some officers ringing doorbells in various buildings to ensure people have vacated their homes.

The disposal of the suspected bomb is set to begin once the evacuation of the area is complete.

Checks for unexploded ordnance are typical prior to construction projects in Germany. However, today's disposal in Darmstadt was highly affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with local medical services organizing a special tent for those residents from the area who are showing any symptoms of the virus.

"The coronavirus spread plays an important role because everyone is talking about that at the moment," Willy Schafer, from Red Cross Darmstadt, said, adding, "We are ensuring that we can provide enough disinfectants."

He continued, "We have made preparations that when people come in, who seem to show signs of having the virus, that we isolate them immediately. For that purpose, we have prepared a special tent outside."
