It is the 40th-day memorial of Lieutenant General Ghasem Soleimani. The former commander of Iran’s IRGC’s Quds Force was assassinated in Baghdad last month along with his companions by the US forces.

Speaking to Press TV, IRGC commanders condemned the assassination as a cowardly act of state terrorism by the United States that went against all international rules and norms.

General Soleimani was reportedly carrying an Iranian response to a Saudi peace overture when he was assassinated in a US drone attack on the orders of President Donald Trump. The assassination also resulted in the death of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units.

In response to Washington’s January three assassination of the top Iranian general, the IRGC fired missiles at a US military base in Iraq, which US later confirmed injured scores of its soldiers. Millions of people in Iran and Iraq took part in the historic funeral of General Soleimani and his companions from four to seven January in Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf, Ahvaz, Mashhad, Tehran, Qom, and his hometown Kerman.

The URGC commanders have warned that US forces must leave the Middle East or risk deadly retaliation to the assassination of General Soleimani. They also say it is now also a question of who gets to stay in Iraq and it will not be US forces.
