Trump 'most dangerous president' in modern US history: Sanders

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has censured Donald Trump as "the most dangerous president in the modern history" of the United States. 

Sanders made the scathing remark at a campaign rally in the state of Iowa on Saturday as he was joined by two of his major allies — New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore.

"What we want to accomplish in this campaign are two fundamental goals. The first is pretty obvious and that is, we will defeat the most dangerous president in the modern history of this country,” the US senator and 2020 presidential candidate said to a cheering crowd in Iowa.

Highlighting the main goals of his presidential campaign, Sanders said, "What this campaign is about is not only defeating Trump. If you believe that we must finally end the massively grotesque level of income and wealth inequality, we are that campaign. If you believe that we have got to end the corrupt political system that allows billionaires to buy elections, we are that campaign. If you believe that health care is a human right not a privilege, we are that campaign. If you believe that together we have got to fight in an aggressive way to save this planet for future generations from climate change, we are that campaign.”

Moore, for his part, stressed that the second thing after "getting rid of Trump" is "to get rid of the system that gave us Donald J. Trump."

The documentary filmmaker went on to say that, "Trump didn't just fall out of the sky. He was the natural extension of the system set up to benefit the few at the expense of the many."

Meanwhile, congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez praised Sanders' campaign by saying it has morphed into a "movement for social, economic and racial justice."

Sanders surges in early primary states, national polls

The Vermont senator led a CNN poll in New Hampshire on Sunday, bolstering evidence that he is gaining momentum just days before voting begins in the Democratic presidential contest.

The survey, conducted by New Hampshire University, found that 25 percent of Democratic primary voters favored Sanders while 16 percent of respondents said they would pick former Vice President Joe Biden to be the Democratic nominee.

Former South Bend, Indian, Mayor Pete Buttigieg earned 15 percent of support, surpassing Senator Elizabeth Warren (D- Massachusetts) with 12 percent.

The CNN poll was carried out from January 15 to 23 among a random population of 1,176 adults in New Hampshire. The margin of error was 4.3 percent.

Moreover, a CBS News poll conducted by YouGov showed that Sanders and Biden are neck and neck in the 2020 Democratic presidential field in Iowa just before the state’s caucuses.

Sanders’ vote stands at 26 percent and has a 1-point lead over Biden.

A new Washington Post-ABC News survey also showed that Sanders and Biden are the only candidates registering at least 20 percent support nationally among Democratic voters.
