US sanctions Venezuela's new Congress speaker

On Wednesday, Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice said it would resolve the country's Congress crisis, as it currently seems to have two different heads.

On one side, Luis Parra, an opposition congressman who many say is now backing President Nicolas Maduro's administration. Parra was elected as Congress speaker days ago. On the other side, there is Juan Guaido, the US backed opposition figure who claims soldiers don't allow him to enter Congress palace.

Venezuela's top court said a verdict will be issued to clarify who the legitimate head of Congress is, as both Parra and Guaido claim to have a majority of legislators supporting their leadership.

Days ago, the US denied Parra visa and the US Treasury office froze his bank accounts. Parra's main collaborators were targeted by the same measures. Washington says these men illegally replaced Guaido through a plot hatched by Maduros's socialist party. However, Parra claims he was legitimately elected as Congress speaker.

But Guaido's camp says Parra's election was a sham.

Meanwhile experts believe the solution of this spat is up to the judges.

As two politicians, Luis Parra and Juan Guaido, fight to take control of Congress, the ongoing political dispute has become the latest excuse for illegal US meddling in Venezuela.
