Notre Dame not hosting Christmas Mass for first time in more than 200 years

Notre Dame cathedral in the French capital skipped hosting Christmas Mass for the first time in more than 200 years due to the damage caused by fire in April. The parish held Mass in the nearby Church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois on Tuesday.

The 855-year-old Notre Dame was the place of France's main Christmas Mass since the Napoleonic times.

The cathedral's spire and frame were destroyed in a blaze on April 15. More than 900 million euros ($887 million) have been promised in donations to restore the historic monument with the process expected to last for at least six years.
