Heatwave conditions and strong winds fanned a coastal bushfire that threatened properties in Western Australia on Saturday (December 14).
Emergency warnings were issued for the Yanchep area, north of Perth, where a blaze began on Wednesday (December 11). Temperatures for the region hovered around 40 degrees Centigrade, challenging attempts by firefighters to contain the fire.
Bushfires have killed at least four people across the east coast of Australia since November, burnt about 2.5 million acres (1 million hectares) of farmland and bush and destroyed more than 400 homes.
Bushfires are common in Australia's hot, dry summers, but the ferocity and early arrival of the fires last month in the southern hemisphere spring is unprecedented. Experts have said climate change has left bushland tinder-dry.
