Former US Vice President Joe Biden has called British Prime Minister Boris Johnson a "physical and emotional clone" of President Donald Trump after Johnson led the Conservative Party to an "historic" general election win.
The Conservatives on Thursday won a majority of 80 in the House of Commons, which is the party's largest since 1987. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was "very sad" about the result.
Speaking at a campaign fundraiser in San Francisco following the news of Johnson’s resounding victory, Biden said it was a warning for Democrats hoping to defeat Trump next year.
The Democratic presidential candidate said that Johnson was able to win because the rival Labour Party had moved too far left.
"Boris Johnson is winning in a walk,” Biden said, predicting that news headlines would say, “Look what happens when the Labour Party moves so, so far to the left. It comes up with ideas that are not able to be contained within a rational basis quickly.”
“You’re also going to see people saying, 'My God, Boris Johnson, who is kind of a physical and emotional clone of the president, is able to win,'” Biden added.
Biden has positioned himself as a more centrist candidate, and criticized sweeping policy proposals from other front-runners such as Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who are part of the party's progressive wing.
US Democratic presidential contender and multibillionaire Michael Bloomberg has said that Trump would beat any of his Democratic rivals in the 2020 election easily, claiming, "Donald Trump would eat 'em up."
Bloomberg and Biden are concerned that liberal candidates and their proposed expensive expansion of government programs, will alienate Democratic voters in battleground states.
