Turkey has responded defiantly against the United States amid an ongoing feud regarding Turkey’s purchase of the Russian made S-400 air defense system.

Turkish President Receb Tayyip Erdogan announced plans on Tuesday that the country will now rely on their own domestically-made fighter jets, instead of seeking to revive the planned purchase of US-made F-35 stealth jets.

In mid-July, 2019, the US removed its key NATO ally, Turkey, from the F-35 program after Ankara began receiving the Russian defense system. The US has previously issued clear orders for Turkey not to follow through with the purchase, however, Ankara didn’t listen.

Despite Erdogan’s rebellious antics, the US Secretary of State reaffirmed Washington’s position.

Under the current administration, the US has sought to punish Turkey for its ‘bad behavior’ - gravitating towards Russia and Iran to form a new regional alliance - which excludes the US. However, Turkey has shown little interest in bowing down to US pressure. How far will this dispute will go and what implications could it have on NATO? Those are the questions many are now asking.
